» How to get promoted?

You would think that doing your job, doing it well, and you'll be rewarded? Probably not. According to career guru Donald Asher, advancement at work is less about skill sets and more about strategy.

Once a person starts out in their profession there are often an endless number of career objectives to meet. They wonder why they cannot get promoted in their job even though they work hard, are knowledgeable, and have great credentials to boot! So how do I get promoted? What things should I be doing in order to set myself up to get that next raise or promotion? These are some of the many questions that my candidates usually ask me.

But from my experiences within the recruiting industry and having listened to many candidate and client insights, keeping track of a few key goals, there should be many more promotions on the way. Read on as I would like to share some useful tips to you and learn how to get promoted!

• Goal Setting – Know and understand them thoroughly: It is very important to be aware of your superior’s vision so that you can work towards achieving those goals. Knowing what your boss wants will help you focus on what is important. Knowing and understanding what your boss thinks is very important to getting promoted. Knowing that they want you to do more and be more analytical will help you focus on the areas that you are weaker in.


• Do, Done and More: Doing something that will help show that you are very well-rounded. It will also help your boss to see that they can give you new responsibilities and does not have to worry about whether or not you can do the job. You want to show your boss that you are a great employee and you take part in the company activities. You want to show your boss that you are important to the company.


• Have the right mind set: Attitude plays an extremely important role in getting promoted. People like to promote others that are very involved with the company. People like to promote people that know a lot of other people in the company. Volunteer at your next company affair. Go and work with other teams. Try to take on extra items that people don't want to do so you can shine. Getting involved with the company and showing that you are a team player will help your boss that promoting you will be a good thing for them as well.

Finally, think not only about the future but also about NOW. Stay focused! Do your best now and remember that you must work smart not harder in order to get promoted. Keep improving until you feel totally satisfied and comfortable with yourself. As getting promoted is difficult, but you can do with a little hard work and a lot of thought.
