» Kudos – A powerful management tip

Hello,

In this newsletter, I would like to share with you a very simple leadership tip that I have been applying to my life and work. It is an useful tip to me and I think that you will like it because all of you, our dear candidates are playing positions of managers/leaders at work.

I am talking about Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson with all-time #1 bestseller “The One Minute Manager”.   The key lesson I have learned throughout the book is how to develop people by “catching them doing the right things.”

“Catch people doing the right things” is a powerful management concept. Unfortunately, in many organizations, most leaders have a genius for catching people doing things wrong. Catching people doing things right provides satisfaction and motivates good performance. Interestingly, when you find and reward good things, more of it shows up in your life.

As a mother and a manager, I know that I got much better results from my kid and employees when I focused on and rewarded for positive performance rather than complained for or criticized their mistakes. We all want to receive kudos rather than reprimand.

For example: Once I told my daughter “Your desk is very tidy, clean and in good order, you do very well, I like it. I think all good students are having tidy and clean desks”. After that, I observed, she always tries to keep the desk clean and tidy so that she gets more praising and kudos from me. It meant that I did not pay much attention on her fault, otherwise, I caught her doing something right and gave her motivation and praise after she did it well. This rule is applied at work as well, however, sometimes we do not pay attention to it.

But please remember, give praise immediately, make it specific, and finally, encourage people to keep up the good work. It’s a marvelous way to interact with and affirm the people in your life. At Navigos Group, our leaders are trained on catching people doing things right, and it helps promote the fun and performing working environment.

Try it today and please let me know what happens in your world. I would love to hear your stories. You can learn to become the One Minute Manager with other two useful tips from Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson – One Minute Goal Setting and One Minute Reprimand.

Wishing you happiness in life and success in career.

Cheers,
Nguyen Thi Van Anh
