Hello,
I was asked recently by one of my staff what the word “perseverance” means. I tried to explain to her in both English and my own language but honestly I was not satisfied with my answer. I was searching for the best examples to illustrate what I was saying to her and finally found this story through a friend of mine. I wish to share it with you as it is so true in life. I hope you enjoy it!
Have you ever observed the behavior of birds in the face of adversity? For days and days, they make their nests, sometimes gathering materials brought from far away. When they have completed the nest and are ready to lay eggs, the weather, the work of humans, or some animal destroy it. The nest and all of their effort falls to the ground. Do they give up bewildered and leave their work? No way. The birds start over building the nest again and again until they have their eggs safely back in the nest. Tragically the nest is sometimes destroyed again and it definitely hurts to go back to the beginning all over but, even so, the birds never stop, they just continue to sing and build, and keep singing and building.
Do you feel at the moment that your job seeking plans are bit like the birds’ nesting challenges? Lots of hard work with forms to fill in, many interviews to attend and unsuccesful applications to knock you back? The reality of the market today is that employers have more choice than they had a year ago and are seeking to hire only the very best candidates. Perseverence is essential in these times and you must keep your spiritis high to be attractive to your potential employer. Here’s a couple tips for you to consider:
1. Make your CV as easy to read as possible. Recruitng managers are reading hundreds of new CVs a week so make your’s stand out by presenting it in a clear and concise format – no more than 2 pages with focus on achievements rather than lists of responsibilities.
2. Be happy where you are. Nothing shines more in an interview than someone who is engaged and passionate – make the best of the situation you are in rather than spend all your time wishing you were somewhere else. You will be 100% more recruitable when you shed negativity.
So be like the birds and persevere – do the singing too, it will keep you smiling.
I wish all of you many wonderful days!
Warmest regards,
Van Anh
